Hp 6320s- platform: DDD UMA 6050A2137901-MB-A03

When started, fan spins a few seconds and then lap shuts down, no display.

When either Ram or cpu removed, fan spins continuously, and no shut down issue.

Current reading : 0.003-0.48-0.76-0.003 then shuts down.


Need urgent help as where to dig further!

Yes replaced ram, and cpu, with known good working ones, same problem.

Look, the EC cuts voltages when something is wrong. So you have to read all cpu voltages before shutting down.
When the cpu or ram are out of mobo (keep in mind that the ram controller is in the cpu) - pwm of cpu doesn`t produce normal voltage
so doesn`t tell the EC that everything is ok with the power (PWRGOOD).
Also if the power sequence somehow is interrupted by something like lack of a cpu, ram ..
the EC may not power up other parts of the mobo thus other pwms don`t bother the ec.
So you have to check the mobo for some shorts, then check powered mobo for wrong voltages with installed cpu .

Hi, thank you for your clarification.

You mean Ram controller is in CPU for Amd and Intel new design mobo with PCH.
As for older intel mobo such as hp6720s, ram controller is integrated in GPU (or NB for other design). P.S correct if It's wrong.

Further diagnostic shows :
-no specific short found;
-all voltages are present and measured good during the few seconds working time of mobo.

CPU voltages :
Vcc_Core :+1.12V
VCCP : +1.18V
+V1.5S : +1.7V

H_Pwrgd : +1.18V
H_Cpurst# :+ 0.30V ?? strange voltage. Normally +1.18V. This pin should be supplied with +VCCP through R212.
R212 = 51_5R is ok

GPU voltages present are : +1.18V; +1.44V; +2.08V

Please advise as where to dig further. Would a bios update resolve the issue ?

P.S read Hp6720S- and not 6320S. Platform is ok

No, just in NB. Gpu may contain ram controller but for its own needs - gpu memory.
Besides, there are some modern chips which combine everything: cpu, gpu, nb, sb and of course - memory controller.


That is not good. Thats why EC could cut the voltages.

Wish to know, as a matter of rule, is flashing the bios the first step to be taken by tech in case of total failing display due to a motherboard hardware issue ?

Today, I tried booting from an USB stick with bios files, stroking "windows" and "B" keys simultaneously with no avail. Tried also with the 4 "arrow" keys, same.

I'll use then the mini-pro TL866CS eprom programmer, I just bought from china and will give soon feed back.

I wouldnt say that is very first step but when you`ve done all necessary things such as searching for shorts and burns and reading voltages...

Vain hopes.

Yes, I do agree, but what I meant is : is it practically better to check thereafter main display signals or go straight away and flash bios ?

Generally, in the lap power sequence, at which stage does the fan normally spin, Is it after sus# signal is issued from ICH to E/C ?

Reflashing is not simple thing especially on intel platforms.


Depends on a platform. Consider this as independent system. Its based on EC. EC collects all thermal data and decides what to do.
Except Intel systems which are more complicated because of ME system.

Hi colleague !

I am back for feed back.
Reflashed bios with intel based dump.

Unfortunately, lack of attention, I was stupid enough to fix back bios upside down. Disconnected charger as soon as I noticed E/C becoming hot. Replaced bios in the right direction and switched on, orange led flashes 8 times and then off, nothing else.

1*-Didn't find any information on the 8 orange blinks. Any idea ?

2*-EC might have gone partially though no trace of burning, no short, and KBC_PW_ON is ok
Wanted, to trace the EC output switch signal (going to SB) after getting PWR_SWIN#, couldn't identify the right pin; EC is "SMSC_KBC1070".

Any further help is welcome.

Do you expect the EC is still alive?

Standart HP signal which tells you that something wrong with power adapter.
Lack of power, for example.


Monkey business unless you resolder the EC. IMHO.

By good chance, EC is still alive. All voltages are ok except +1.25V. Replaced Q2004 partially short, and +1.25V came.

All system signals are now ok, including H_Pwrgd and H_Cpurst#=+1.18V.

But at CN18 lcd connector, +V3A is missing (pins 18-19-20) due to "LVDS_VDD_EN" absent.
LVDSA_DATA are also absent, so no display.

I think GPU need to be reflowed.

Will process tomorrow and give feed back.

If any other idea, P.S suggest.

Flashed bios, reflowed GPU to no avail, except fan spins continuously at same speed with no more shut down, and current reading stopped at 0.68., which I think point to gpu issue!

As H_Pwrgd and H_Cpurst# are ok +1.8V, I can conclude that EC, Bios and SB are ok, aren't they ?

Any advice as where to dig further and what to check particularly at this stage?
